Because they were trying to secure the raw materials available in South East Asia for their industries.Michael Montagne

I know I'll never find the exact quote again, but one Japanese diplomat shortly after the war said one of the reasons they did not invade the West Coast was because 1/2 to 2/3 of the US population was armed. Score a point for the Second Ammendment!

Additionally from a logisitical point of view the Japanese would not have been able to supply a significant army to invade the West Coast of America let alone Hawaii. Their supply bases were too far away and it would have required too many supply ships moving along long routes susceptable to submarines and air attack.

THE JAPANESE DID NOT CHOOSE TO GO EAST TO AMERICA AT THAT TIME, ALTHOUGH THEY DID WANT TO GET REVENGE FOR THE BOYCOTTS OF RAW MATERIAL THAT THE U.S.DECIDED TO CHOKE OFF FROM THEM.THAT IS WHY THEY WENT TO S.E. ASIA BECAUSE INDO-CHINA COULD SUPPLY Japan WITH ALL THAT WAS NEEDED. BY FORCE.AMERICA WAS DEFINATELY A PRIORITY LOWER ON THE LIST, AND THEY NEEDEDTO HAVE THEIR REAR FLANK COVERED. THE MAIN OBJECTIVE WAS TO CONTROL CHINA FIRST AND A PLAN WAS NEEDED TO GAIN CONTROL OF THE HAWIIAN ILES WHERE THEY WOULD HAVE A BASE FROM WICH TO LAUNCH AN ATTACK AT THE WEST COAST OF AMERICA
