Booth was a supporter of the south and didn't believe what Lincoln was doing was civil. He organized a plan to take out three major leaders of the union including Lincoln. Why at Ford's Theatre? That is where Lincoln was going to be and Ford's Theatre was Booth's home turf. For an assassin, having the home field advantage greatly improved the chances of success.
April 14, 1865
Lincoln, his wife, and their guests enter the theater. They go up to the presidents box. Everybody knew the president was coming to the theater. Everyone claps, The play stops. And the play starts again. Everyone enjoying their selves at that theater. About 10:11 PM. Booth makes his way up the stairs toward the presidents box. He was seen but no one says anything. No one stops him. No one pays any mind to him. He was a popular actor. Well known to everyone. They let him get behind Lincoln. No one in the box knowing he is there until it is too late. Booth pulls out his gun, right behind Lincoln’s head. He takes his shot from about 4 inches away. No one realizing what just happened until just a few seconds later. Lincoln leans forward in his seat. People wondering what happened until a woman yelled “Ladies and gentlemen, the presidents been shot!” Booth hurried towards the railing attempting to jump and make his escape. Major Henry Rathbone gets up from his seat and pulls Booth from the railing attempting to stop him. Rathbone then realized Booth was much stronger than him. This allowed Booth to pull a dagger from his pocket and give Rathbone a gash in his arm. Booth then proceeded towards the railing. Booth jumps from the box breaking a few bones in his leg but nothing that could stop his escape. He runs on to the stage and escapes. President Lincoln is rushed to the hospital then dying the next morning April 15, 1865 7:55 AM. Booth wasn’t caught until 12 days later when he was tracked to a barn. Booth assassinated Lincoln because he thought he was doing the south a favor but really he was ruining the great things that were soon to come. The future was finally starting to clear up until that one gunshot. It was never found out exactly why Booth assassinated Lincoln. All that was known was that Booth didn’t believe what Lincoln was doing was right.
Because John Wilkes Booth was a coward who didn’t believe in America. He believed in a world where misery was king, where the suffering of others was a worthy cause. John Wilkes Booth was a washed up actor who wanted to larp as some kind of revolutionary savior. Well he wasn’t. He was a coward, and now he’s burning in hell. Good riddance. Lincoln was one of the only good Republicans in this world. He was a father, a husband, a son. He was one of the best presidents we ever had. And he died a gruesome death because a washed up actor didn’t want humans to be treated like humans.
According to his diary entries he thought he would be seen as a hero and that the war would continue. He was very surprised by the reaction to his deed. Southerners wouldn't help him and refused him a place to hide. He travelled around VA for several days before he was tracked down in a barn where he was shot.
He didn't like some of the choices that President Lincoln had made. Booth and his helpers actually had planned to kill more than just Abraham Lincoln.
He did it to keep the war from ending.
