Muslims wished to expand their empire for two major sets of reasons:

Bundle 1: Salvation through Islam: Muslims believed (and still do) that their religion is the religion for mankind and they wanted to bring more people into the fold. There are a number of reasons related to religious nature of Islam that promoted the expansion of the Islamic Caliphates.

Bundle 2: Geopolitics: It was the nature of all empires in the Middle Ages to expand and conquer neighboring territories. It was typical for every ascendant power to wish to expand its territory, increase the population base, and acquire strategic areas.
