Because originally they were closely-related people. The Myceneans were originally the Aegi, a people related to the Cretans. Both peoples spoke non-Indo European languages related to present-day Abkhazi. First the Pelasgoi, a people related to the Hittites, conquered them but came to speak their language. Then a Semitic invasion from Phoenicia occured. Lastly, a Centum Indo-European tribe from the Ukraine invaded and made them into Ionians. These were the people we call the Mycenaeans. They always looked to Crete for culture because of proximity and relatedness. Finally they were conquered by the Dorians from the Adriatic, who spoke another dialect of Greek.
