A hogan is a cozy and warm house to live in in the high deserts were there can be snow and it is quite cold in the winter. In the summer it stay cool because of the traditional thick dirt on the roof and sometimes walls. It is also has tradional symbolic meaning described in the creation stories associated with Changing Woman. Each part has a religious meaning and traditional ceremonies take place in a hogan. The first hogans are said to be built by the Holy People of turquoise, white shell, jet, and abalone shell. The door always faces east.
