As a matter of fact, Northern Renaissance is usually said to have started in France, under François Ier. His mother being from the house of Savoy (Lords of Piedmont), he was made familiar with Italian art since a very early age. François Ier grew up to be an important patron of the arts and famously became a close friend of Leonardo da vinci, whom he called "my father".

Moreover, skirmishes and commercial relations between France and Italy encouraged, respectively, the movement of troops and goods, which reinforced the Renaissance trend.
