That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed;....


Religious persecution was one of the biggest reasons that colonists had fled from Britain. American Colonists had strong beliefs in God, but not necessarily a British-rule form of God or faith (primarily Protestant). Even in colonial days, people wanted freedom of choice in whatever God they wanted to believe in, to whatever degree they believed (or not).


The men who penned these documents knew they had to unite all colonists under certain ideals, but using broad enough language to include "all"....everyone. ".... that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness" was broad enough but also included the highlights of these ideals ("...Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness"...).
