It began later in the north because they had less exposure to trade and new ideas. The invention of the printing press was a primary factor of why it started in the north.

Edit: Also, the Plague had delayed the Northern Renaissance from starting. There are many other factors that you can read about in the link below where the information that I wrote about came from.

The renaissance began in Italy earlier than it occurred in the rest of Western Europe. The cities of Florence, Genoa, and Venice supported the Arts to an extent unknown in the rest of Europe. The Renaissance would begin a few centuries later in Western Europe but at that point, creativity in art, music, and science would slowly leave Italy and move north. Mozart, Bach, and others composed Germany. Rembrandt, Rubens, and Vermeer painted in Holland, and science moved to England and France. So the basic difference was that Italy started the Renaissance and then sat on its laurels. It stopped making progress and making future developments. Other countries developed ideas first produced in Italy.

Because that is where Rome is. Rome was the seat of power and was the government in Europe. When it fell in 410 AD everything was gone. Services that had been there for people and cities were gone. The roads weren't kept up, the aqua ducts were allowed to fall in disrepair, society fell apart, and there was no longer an army to protect people from the tribes of raiders. Life was chaos, so when the Renaissance started it started in Italy. The crusaders were mainly under the protection of the pope so they came from all over Europe, but they brought back ideas, art, math, and science into Italy. There was also a movement all ready in Italy that was protected by the city/state families like the Medici and they promoted the buildings and art. So, it makes sense that where things went wrong first that the budding of the new life would start.

Florence, Italy was the birthplace of Renaissance art. The people of Florence supported the arts and people like the Medici supported Michelangelo and others. The Pope also commissioned art for the Vatican in Rome and had St. Peter's designed. Italy had powerful city states that traded with all of Europe and as the art grew in Italy it spread to the rest of Europe.
