Crucifixion was very popular among the Romans. The reason they crucified Spartacus' army was because they were initially slaves or gladiators. They rose up against the empire wishing for their freedom but were massacred in battle by an entire Roman Legion. However, they were betrayed when they tried to leave the country before the battle leading to the deaths of thousands.
