They fought a war (the Lusitanian War) from 155 B.C. to 139 B.C. against the Romans who had taken over southern Spain from the Carthaginians. This was a rebellion, but its exact reasons were not clarified by ancient writers. They were defeated. After this the Lusitanians continued to fight the Romans. However, there was a gradual process of Romanisation. The area was assimilated, rather than conquered.
