There were several factors:

  • Some members of the congregation had difficulty finding employment.
  • Some had spent all their savings.
  • Their children were beginning to speak Dutch; some members of the congregation were concerned that, in time, they would cease to be English.
  • They feared that the Spanish might return to the Netherlands and impose a Catholic regime.
  • Some felt that the Dutch were too tolerant (which is ironic, considering that the religious tolerance that the Dutch showed to the Separatists was what brought them there in the first place), and they were among groups that they considered to have "loose morals", compared to themselves.
