I saw this on Nova, you see the support beams in the towers were coats with a pretty flimsy fire retardant, when the planes hit the force of the impact blew off the fire retardant and a fire was started. Because the fire retardant was gone the heat from the flames eventually made the support beams buckle and collapse.
