Why did the U.S. care so much about Pearl Harbor if Hawaii was not even a U.S. state yet when it got bombed?

Hawaii was annexed by the United States, becoming a territory in 1900. A territory of the United States means it was a defined area, considered to be a possession of the United States. Furthermore, the raid on Pearl Harbor destroyed some of the United States Navy. So, of course the U.S. cared quite a lot.
