Saddam Hussein, the oppressive dictator in question, was captured in 2003 and subsequently executed by hanging on December 30, 2006.
The assumed existence there of "weapons of mass destruction". As it turned out, Iraq had nothing of the kind and the CIA reports on the subject are strongly suspected to have been written with the aim to provide an excuse for invasion. The general opinion today is that Iraq's invasion was in reality mostly if not solely motivated by the wish of US Government officials to "finish the job" of the earlier US invasion of Iraq. President George W. Bush's powerful vice President Dick Cheney - Secretary of Defence during the first Iraqi invasion - was certainly among them. Other strong incentives were the hopes of installing a US-friendly puppet government in Iraq that would supply the US with all the oil it needed, making the US independent of Saudi oil - Saudi Arabia's fundamentalist beliefs, men and money being at the cradle of Al-Quaeda and Osama bin Laden, and Saudi being the nationality of many of the 9/11 terrorists. But for political and 'oil' reasons Saudi Arabia was not a conceivable target for retaliation at the time. Creating a new powerful and oil-rich US ally in the region in the form of an Iraq "liberated by the US from its dictator" might free the hands of the US towards Saudi Arabia in case of future Saudi-backed terrorist attacks. And of course - had things gone to plan - US companies such as Dick Cheney's Haliburton oil company would have made a killing in profits, rebuilding Iraq and its oil industry. As we now know, things turned out rather differently.
Hawaii is the only independent country acquired by the US. After wars, the US occupied the Phillipines, Cuba, Japan ,Iraq, and parts of Afghanistan, Italy, Germany and Austria.
Iraq did not go to war with the US. Iraq did invade Kuwait in 1991, and there was a UN response of which the US was the leading contributor. Then the US went back to Iraq again, in 2002, because of concern about noncompliance with UN security council resolutions and weapons inspections. Iraq never declared war on the US, although it is possible to argue that their actions were provocative.
If you mean "you" as in the armed forces, then NO. The US and UK armed forces attacked Iraq on March 20, 2003 (Operation Iraqi Freedom).
The CIA entered Iraq in July 10th, 2002. Then, the actual military entered Iraq March 20th, 2003.
INSPECTIONS allowed the US to determine WHAT was in Iraq.

Because Iraq invaded Kuwait and Kuwait is an ally of the US. Iraq's invasion also was a major threat to Saudi Arabia and under no condition could the Western world allow such a concentration of the world oil reserves to be controlled by Saddam Hussein.
