The United States has fought Spain on several occasions, but in the Spanish-American War, the impetus for the American Declaration of War was the sinking of the USS MAINE off of Cuba and the Yellow Journalism associated with that event.

A low level war for independence had been going on in Cuba for over 60 years. Spain had been unable to maintain order in Cuba but the rebels had been unable to capture the island. Pirates used Cuba as a refuge. After the Battleship Maine was blown up, the United States declared war on Spain. After the war, the United States made Cuba an independent nation.
