The United States Territory of Hawaii (it didn't become a State until 1959) maintained the primary U.S. Navy & Marine Corps fleet and air stations for defense and patrol of the entire Pacific at Pearl Harbor and the surrounding areas. There were also forward deployed units in the Philippines.

Aside from the fleet docks/fueling storage/drydocks at Pearl, there were also Army Air Corps/Marines Corps/Navy airfields for both island territorial defense and disembarked air squadrons not attached to carriers. There were also fleet command centers and medical facilities on the island.
