The reason why the US intervened in Vietnam was to stop the flow of communism and to stop what was called "The Domino Affect" which was basically a predicted hypothesis that would mean that after one country became communist, its neighbors would. By intervening in Vietnam they could stop the spread further down and try and turn them democratic.
According to the Truman doctrine, the USA promised to help any nation that was threatened losing freedom or democracy. The USA in the 1960s wanted to prevent South Vietnam to become a communist country. The result was that the whole of Vietnam became a communist country.
Approximately 170,000 US Hispanic servicemen served in the Vietnam War, over 3,000 died there. They were affected in the same vein as the Anglo's were.
