The Cuban state at the time was more than accepting of Soviet ships at the time, and they held a lot of anger towards the U.S. for good reason, in particular, the botched U.S. CIA operation that was later called the "Bay of Pigs". The Soviets had to ship their nuclear weapons and materials by ship at the time. At the time, nuclear missile technology was not exactly simple to pick up and take on a plane. As well, there were few Soviet aircraft which could reliably transport nuclear materials, and even the ones that could were generally restricted for actual nuclear operations, and you can bet the U.S. was looking for them. Also, the Soviets were doing it secretly; it was a "surprise" in case the Americans got a little...carried away, so to speak. Anyhow, air delivery was out of the question, so they blockaded the island from Soviet ships.

The story of why they blockaded the Soviet ships has a lot to do with why they did not want the missiles in Cuba in the first place; the advantage the U.S. was taking advantage of; a 3000 mile gap between Soviet ICBM's and reasonable American targets had shrunk to only 90 miles. This meant a nuclear warhead, instead of landing in maybe 18 to 20 hours, where a lot of people could be somewhere safe, reducing casualties substantially, shrunk to half an hour.

Think about the difference for you, if you were in that position: if you were told a nuclear warhead was going to hit your hometown in 18 hours, you would be terrified, but you can run, but 30 minutes...that was helluva scary for the Americans at the time, so the panic made the U.S. react very strongly, blockading the island, so the threat from the island would not go any larger; lest the potential bloodshed would get MUCH larger.

How did the soviet union become involved with cuba and what was the result of this?

Russia placed missiles in Cuba since Castro was the dictator and had a relationship with the government. The result is that JFK demanded that the missiles be removed since they were only 90 miles from the coast of the United States and when this didn't happen he set up a Naval boycott of the island and didn't allow ships into Cuba. This is the Cuban Missile Crisis and the world was very close to war because of this problem.

Did any of Hernan Cortes' 11 ships ever sink?

When Hernan Cortes reached Yucatan in 1519, set on conquering the Aztecs, he scuttled 10 of his 11 ships and sent the other back to Cuba with some of the treasure he had located. He did this so that his men would have no thought of returning to Cuba.

Why were missiles sent to Cuba?

To avoid war between the Soviet Union & the United States. The Soviet Union also realized the mistake of putting its nuclear weapons in Cuba where Castro could gain control of them. Castro's communist Cuba would have had the potential to start a world-wide nuclear war, even if the Soviet Union didn't want it. Also the Soviet Union was building submarines that could launch nuclear weapons against the United States, so the weapons in Cuba would not be as important as before.

Why didn't the US overthrow Castro?

Castro took charge of Cuba in 1959. The US tried to invade and overthrow Castro's government in the 1961 Bay of Pigs Invasion; the country repelled the US forces. Cuba had become allies with the Soviet Union in 1959, and after the failed US invasion attempt, the Soviet Union and Cuba agreed to secretly station nuclear missiles in Cuba. The US was already experiencing tension with the Soviet Union; if they attacked Cuba again, the Soviet Union/Cuba would react by initiating war via the missiles. The Cuban Missile Crisis brought the US to the brink of nuclear war with the Soviet Union, and after the removal of the missiles was negotiated, the US backed down because they didn't want tensions to heighten again. This happened during the Cold War, which started in 1947 and didn't end until 1991. The embargo set up by the US against Cuba in 1962 is still in effect today; other US interactions with Cuba have been minimal.

How did President Kennedy resolve the Cuban Missile crisis?

Did the Cuban Missile Crisis increase tensions between the US and Russia?

The Cuban Missile Crisis helped to escalate and de-escalate tensions with the Soviet Union. It escalated the tensions because the Soviet Union repeatedly told the US that they would not place missiles in Cuba and that there was no reason for concern and then they went ahead and did it anyway. This caused tensions to escalate because the US and other countries could no longer trust the Soviet Union. Tensions de-escalated because the US was able to gain the support of so many other countries. This showed the Soviet Union that they had no support and that their testing the US and placing missiles in different places would not be tolerated at all. So, they removed their missiles from Cuba and the tensions partially de-escalated.
