John Smith did not "find" Jamestown. The colony was funded and established by the Virginia Company, a private group of investors, by sending 106 men to VA. When Smith arrived in Jamestown in late 1608 he was the second governor of the colony. He found 34 of the 106 men alive so he began to set rules for the colony. The colony had spent time looking for gold instead of planting crops so he began to ration the food and got the Native Americans in the area to give them food. While there two more convoys arrived in Jamestown so the population numbered about 200. Due to a accident with gun powder Smith had to return to England for medical treatment in 1609. That winter the death toll was also high with typhoid, dysentery, and salt poisoning because of the contaminated water.

Who led the expedition to find Virginia?

John Smith. The Virginia expedition was what the movie "Pocahontas" was based off of. The actual outcome was much different though. The Natives initially reacted with hostility, but after John Rolfe introduced tobacco to Virginia, he married Pocahontas (NOT John Smith. Common misconception thanks to the movie) and a period of relative peace followed.

When in 1607 was Virginia founded by John Smith?

VA was not established by Smith. It was established by the Virginia Company when it sent 106 men to search for gold and silver. This was a group of investors that wanted a fast return on their money. Smith arrived in the colony in late 1608 to find 34 of the 106 still alive. He set rules for the colony, began to ration food, and got food from the Native Americans in the area. In 1609 he will need to return to England due to burns from a gun powder accident. He was in the colony less than 2 years and his role in colony has been made larger than it really was due to a book he wrote later about his experience.
