When Abraham Lincoln was elected to presidency in 1861, everybody knew that he was strongly against slavery. Because of this, the South Carolina legislature threatened to secede from the United States. The delegates later called a state convention, and voted to remove S.C. from the nation. After 6 more states (Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas) seceded, Virginia was still extremely hesitant about leaving the union.

Virginia was not so decisive on leaving the United States because of the fact that it played such a large role in forming the nation. Virginia was also in such an excellently situated strategic position (economically, socially, etc.), which was an important reason as to why its government did not want to secede from the states.

It was a tough issue for the Virginia government to come to a conclusion finally the south bumbarged government land, Fort Sumter. Which lead to the Civil War.
