Religious objection. But probably the main point is that in any circumstances and at any time in History, there have always been individuals who can see more clearly than others. Abolitionists "simply" could see that Blacks were human beings just like them and slavery was therefore a most horrible crime, and no sane individual with minimum intellectual capacities needs to read The Bible to understand this anyway.
