It was the closest landfall from England. But there were numerous places up and down the Normandy coast the allies could have concentrated the landing. The idea was to keep the Germans guessing where on the Normandy coast, and if possible to trick them all together. By a series of carefully "planted" false "coded communications", the Allies did this. Hitler was convinced they would make the assault further north than they did, and concentrated troops and armor there. The five beaches the Allies landed on (Omaha, Utah, Gold, Sword and Juno) were relatively unprotected except for Omaha, which while not that heavily protected, did have an advantage for the Germans in positioning (hidden, and firing down at the Allies, a distinct advantage). Omaha was hard won. The other four beaches, as sea-born invasions go, were not difficult.

Normandy was not the closest point to England. That was the Pas de Calais, where the Germans expected the attack to come. Eisenhower chose Normandy for that reason.

What has Stamford bridge got to do with the Battle of Hastings?

As William was waiting to invade from Normandy, Harald Hardrada and Tostig, (King Harolds' brother), invaded on the northeast coast, attacked York and beat a locally raised army. King Harold had to rush northwards almost 250 miles with his bodyguard, raise another army and attack the Norse invaders at Stamford Bridge east of York; all of this without alerting the enemy. After the Norse army were beaten, word came of the expected invasion from Normandy, so Harold had to ride south with his bodyguard and pick up another army to fight William near Hastings. The rest is history.

What is the nickname for the day the Allies land in Normandy?

D-Day was one, 'the longest day' is another and the name of a movie about D-Day. The military name was 'Operation Overlord'. Any military operation has a 'd-day' and even an 'h-hour'. This differs from an actual date and time because you can refer to 'd-day' long before you actually pick a date, or you can change the date without having to change references to 'd-day' in planning documents.
