the archduke of Austro Hungary got killed because he was the next in line to the throne of the old empire. But there was an another reason. The south part of the Austro Hungarien empire wanted to break away from the empire, as they did not like the empire. They also thought that if Franz Ferdinand did become the emperor, then the empire will fall out very badly. He was killed on 28th June 1914, and so did his wife Sophie die. He was assassinated by the Black Hand group. And they had 3 attempts to kill him. Only the 3rd one succeeded . He was called Gavrillo Princip, and was only 19 years old.
