It was an excellent strategic choice which included port facilities with a well protected harbor and a northern connecting route to friendly terrain via the Hudson River to Canada. It contained a relatively large Loyalist population, well built up facilities for sheltering their Army and was a storehouse of goods for the Continental Army. It divided the New England States from the revolutionaries in the south and a had a large and hopefully controllable population.
