To answer this question I think that it best to consider a hypothetical situation: would you allow your child, let us say 10-year-old boy, to read a magazine like playboy or some other pornographic magazine? I think not; as you would like to protect your son from things about which he is not ready to learn. Just like a protective mother, Mother Church, did prohibit the reading of some books that would put peoples souls in jeopardy.

These books were considered dangerous to faith and morals. An example of such a book would be a bad translation of The Bible.

I think a modern example of this would be most useful for clarification.

Let us consider a bible translation used by some quasi-Christian sects today the New World Translation, and the verse John 1:1.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was [a] god (brackets added to distinguish the word in question).

Now the Catholic, or orthodox, translation from the New American Bible Catholic Edition

Verse John 1:1.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

This is a good example of how a miss translation could lead to a grave heresy; in this case Arianism (the denial of the divinity of Christ). Notice the erroneous edition of the article "a." This is not the place for a theological discussion; but that is a grave error.

We must also remember that you cannot judge the past by today's standards. Times and mindsets have changed. In our modern society, where the prevailing attitude is: "There ain't no one going to tell me what to do!" is a rather new phenomena and that was not always how things were. Despite being "modern," today, we still see censorship by some Christian groups.

A good example of this is the Harry Potter series of books; some believe that they promote witchcraft by making it look harmless and fun.

However, you may sleep soundly this evening knowing that the church no longer bans books - per se - but does issue warnings about certain things…and look at governments…censorship has been around, and, I am afraid, shall remain…but, in our case it was to save your Soul!

The Catholic Church published the Index of Forbidden Books in order to maintain control over the dissemination of ideas and protect the faithful from what it deemed as morally harmful or heretical literature. The Index aimed to prevent Catholics from reading books that were considered dangerous to their faith or morality, and to ensure that Catholic teaching was followed and upheld. It was abolished in 1966, reflecting changes in the church's approach to censorship and the increasing importance of individual discernment in matters of faith.

What Scriptures did the Catholic Church change in the Bible?

Roman Catholic AnswerYou are operating with a mistaken assumption. The Catholic Church wrote the Bible, the Catholic Church decided which books were canonical (included in the Bible), and the Catholic Church has conserved the Bible through the centuries. The only ones who changed any Scriptures in the Bible are the protestants, who, after fifteen centuries of a Bible preserved by the Catholic Church came along and threw books out of the Bible, and changed the meanings of books they would not throw out.

What caused Erasmus to criticize the teachings and practices of the Roman Catholic Church?

Roman Catholic AnswerAlthough Erasmus lived at the same time as Martin Luther, and had similar complaints about the Church, nevertheless, he remained a true Catholic and wished to reform the Church from the inside and did not wish to be considered a heretic as Martin Luther came to be. His writings were used by the protestant "reformers" though, and the Pope placed all of them on the Index of Forbidden Books.

Do you publish adult joke books?

No, I do not publish adult joke books.

Where can a List of Prohibited Books on the Roman Catholic Church Be found?

I am assuming that you are asking for a list of prohibited books issued by the Catholic Church, not on. Further, it's just Catholic, not Roman Catholic. Roman is an epithet first commonly used in England after the protestant revolt to describe the Catholic Church. It is never used by the official Catholic Church. The last Index of Prohibited Books was issued in 1948 and the entire Index was abolished by Pope Paul VI in 1966. You may see the 1948 Index at the link below.

Was it a crime to teach people to read the Bible?

First of all, after the Reformation, as we all know, the Roman Catholic Church and the Protestants had been separated from each other. The Roman Catholic Church had put the Bible in the Index Prohibitorum. The common misconception should be corrected right now that this happened. Although the Catholic Church has forbidden to read the Bible, it is only the Protestant versions that were forbidden to be read because the Protestants had removed seven books from the Bible. Then, the Protestants had preached the Gospel in order to gain members. The preaching of the Word of God is not the crime that they committed; they are accused of heresy because of their preaching of false doctrines and interpretations about the Bible to contradict the Church's teachings.

What do you call the list of prohibited books of the Roman Catholic Church for their members?

The list of prohibited books was called the Index.

Which Italian mathematician and astronomer was forbidden by the authorities to teach his ideas?

Galileo Galilei was the Italian mathematician and astronomer who was forbidden by the authorities to teach his ideas. His support for the heliocentric model proposed by Copernicus, which stated that the Earth revolved around the Sun, was deemed heretical by the Catholic Church. Galileo's works were placed on the Index of Forbidden Books and he was placed under house arrest for the remainder of his life.

What censors did the cathlioic church ban?

Roman Catholic AnswerYour question is a little confusing. A censor in the Catholic Church: there is a censor in each diocese, they do NOT ban books, they read them and issue a nihil obstat meaning that nothing hinders the publication of the work reviewed. They can refuse a nihil obstat to a book that does not agree with Church teaching, but they can not ban its publication. The publication that the Church kept up until the early 1960's was commonly known as the Index or Index of Forbidden Books. This was a list of books that Catholics were only to read if they got special permission from their Bishop. Any reasonable request was usually granted. Attached below is the latest Index published in 1948, after June 1966 it was completely abolished by Pope Paul VI and has not been published or enforced since then. The Church placed books on the Index which were considered heretical or anti-Catholic in nature and were banned for reading by Catholics.AnswerThe Catholic Church formerly had a list of banned books, known as the Index of Prohibited Books. One book that found its way onto this list was On the Revolution of the Celestial Spheres, by the Polish astronomer Nicholas Copernicus.
