The reason was that England was over-taxing the colonists for their purchases of paint, tea, and other needs in order to pay for their (England's) war with a different country.

The colonists tried smuggling in tea and other goods from elsewhere, but were caught at it by the British, who then blockaded at least the northern colonies to force taxed purchases from England.

That was pretty much the final straw for the colonists, and they declared independance from England.
