Why colonists wanted independence?

One of the main reasons is taxes. Britain had just fought the French and Indian War, and because of it was in debt. England decided that since it was fought on American soil, then it was fair to make the colonists pay for it. Except, the colonists felt like they didn't have a say in the British Parliament, so they began to rebel. They felt like England was being unfair taxing them for help (in the French and Indian War) that they never even asked for.

Mainly, the Americans wanted England to take away unfair taxes, repeal the unfair acts (Intolerable Acts, Stamp Act, Sugar Act etc.)and to be represented in the British Parliament, but since Great Britain refused to do so, they declared independence.

I'm not an historian and it's been awhile since I my class in American history, but I do know this much. The big deal at the time was 'Taxation without representation'. There was no one in Parlament to represent the colonists that was actually from the colonies. I'm sure there were a lot of other things going on, but that's the thing I remember the most. Also, I think I remember that Britain had just been in a war to keep trade routes open in the Atlantic. I think that the wars were faught mostly in Europe. The colonists benefitted from the outcome of these wars, open trade routes, but because the wars were not faught on American soil, it wasn't very a very personal war for the colonists. They didn't understand why they were being taxed to help pay for this war. I know a lot of the raises in taxes at the time were to pay for this war. Even though the colonies benefitted from the open trade routes, they didn't want to help pay for the war that kept those trade routes open. I'd check with a real historian on that last paragraph!
Many of the colonists were tired and angry with the way that the British was treating them especially in Parliament. There was no representative in Parliament for the colonist so they had no say in government. Regarding Parliament, the colonists were being heavily taxed with acts such as the sugar act, stamp act, and eventually the townsend acts which basically taxed evry single item on the market. There were other acts like quartering soldiers in houses and etc. However, other reasons included the fact that the colonists had no freedom and their natural rights (life, liberty, property or persuit of happiness) weren't well taken into account.

The document known as the Declaration of Independence, pretty much says it all. Including, "All men are created equal." Also, "The rights of Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness." This is what the American Colonists wanted, and would never have, as long as Great Britain controlled them.
