George Washington and his army caught up with the tail end of General Lord Cornwallis' rear guard which was battling General Charles Lee's continental soldiers with good success. By careful maneuvering to establish a new battle line, Washington got his troops into position to fire cannon across the British lines, which forced them to withdraw (firing across the lines instead of into them practically guarantees that a cannon ball is going to kill at least one enemy and wound many others).
