Jefferson Davis was a West Point graduate with experience in government. He had served as a US Senator from Mississippi and was Secretary of War under Franklin Pierce, in which position he ironically did a great deal to bolster the US mililtary forces. Davis was first considered for the position of commander of the Confederate army, but after a second thought the leaders made him President.
