The Middle Colonies were not exactly founded, though Henry Hudson discovered the area where the middle colonies would be built in 1609. The Dutch then took over soon after. In the 1630's there was a bit of a battle between the Dutch and the Swedes over this land, which the Swedes lost, resulting in the land being called New Netherland by the Dutch. However, England then came along and took away this land from the Dutch in the 1660s, and renamed it New York after the Duke of York, James II.Pennsylvania was founded by William Penn in 1681, English Quakers and other Europeans seeking freedom and equality.

Prior to becoming an American-British colony, the area that is now Delaware was settled by Swedes and Dutch immigrants. In 1682, it was ceded to the powerful British. Soon after it became one of the thirteen original American colonies.
