The choice of Esther was a not a challenge for early Church fathers because Esther had previously been included in the canon of the Septuagint and the standard Hebrew Scriptures (TANAKH) from which it derived. The Book of Enoch, on the other hand, was never in the TANAKH or the Septuagint. Enoch didn't meet the criteria for inclusion in the Hebrew canon. Except for the Coptic Scriptures, it has always been a stand alone volume. Parts of Enoch were found in the Dead Sea Scrolls, so it can be concluded that the Essenes thought highly enough of it to have it in their library, and also thought it worthy of salvaging.
