The colonists were in a new land they weren't accustomed to that was filled with Native Americans who had a totally different culture. the two groups were enemies at times and so there were raids. Also, the colonists didn't know how to work the land and grow crops for food. PLus, their main focus was to look for gold and riches. They wasted their time looking for treasure when they should have been building proper shelter and growing crops.
