Japan is a resource-poor country. They wanted China's resources. It was the same with Pearl Harbor. At the time, the U.S. was the world's largest oil producer. In response to Japanese outrages in China and elsewhere, the U.S. cut off exports of oil and steel to Japan. That was really an act of war, because without oil, Japan would be out of business. The Japanese decided to seize the oil fields in the Dutch East Indies, now part of Indonesia. As a precaution they sank the American fleet at Pearl Harbor first.

All of the AXIS powers in WWII were accused of commiting war crimes. Some of the allied powers were accused of some war crimes. In the military, when a battle or war is fought, when it is done, a report must be written. The report is generally called an AAR, in most military forces. And if the name of the report has a different title, it will still be a report for the same reason, namely, an After Action Report (AAR). An AAR answers, what happened? Why did it happen? When did it happen? Where did it hapen? What were the results? In order to answer the question "why did Japan commit so many......" the historian MUST read those after action reports. If those reports no longer exist, then the historian must interview the witness's (survivors). If none of those sources exist, then it's all theory and hearsay.

Later, during World War 2, they invaded the Philippines. During what we know as the Early Modern Era in the West, they invaded Korea. They also invaded Korea during the 1905 Russo-Japanese War.
