Accusing somebody of having scurvy would mean that they are weakened by vitamin C deficiency from being at sea without fresh vegetables or citrus fruit. One of the symptoms is that your teeth loosen up and fall out. Calling a person a dog is a general term of abuse implying that he has the morals of a canine. Put them together and you have a made-for-movies insult that the censors will allow. Aargh.
