First of all lets deal with confusinf terms. Historians use the term Roman Empire to refer to the period of rule by emeprors which followed the Republic. However, the Republic already had an empire. In fact, much Rome's imperial expansion occurred during the republic.

Augustus became an absolute ruler by winning several civil wars against the enemies of Julius Caesar, the supporters of Mark Antony, and Mark Antony himself, who was the most powerful of Julius Caesar's supporters. His friend Agrippa's military brilliance also played a crucial part in Augustus' military success.

Augustus' first victory was in a civil war was against the armies of the assassins of Caesar, Brutus and Cassius, (the Liberators' civil war 44-42 BC) which he fought together with Mark Antony, the second one was against a rebellion (the Sicilian revolt, 44-36 BC) by the son of Pompey the Great the man who had fought against Julius Caesar in Caesar's Civil War (49-45 BC), the third one was against the brother and the wife of Mark Antony (the Perusine War, 41-40 BC) and the fourth one was against Mark Antony himself and his ally, Cleopatra VII of Egypt (the Final War of the Roman Republic, 32-30 BC). After these victories, Augustus controlled all the legions (armies) including those which had fought against him. This, as well as the enormous wealth he accumulated through the spoils of war of his military victories (originally Augustus was not very rich) is what gave him the muscle to impose himself as an absolute ruler.

Agrippa (Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa) played a crucial part in Augustus winning the 2nd, and 4th of these civil wars. He was Augustus' best friend, most trusted ally and his best general and admiral. He was the man who commanded Augustus' navy and won the naval battles which were decisive for winning the Sicilian Revolt and the Final War of the Roman Republic. Without Agrippa's help, Augustus might not have succeeded in becoming emperor. Agrippa also helped Augustus to consolidate his power once he became emperor.

More generally, the Republic fell under the weight of imperialism. It had become dysfunctional because of it. The central government lost control over the provinces (conquered territories). The governors of the provinces acted independently from Rome. The professionalisation of the army led to soldiers being loyal to their military commanders. These men could use their soldiers to obtain what they wanted through violence or the threat of violence. Corruption was rampant and endemic. The senators became unpopular and were seen as being only concerned with the interests of the aristocracy. All this led to civil wars. In the first one Julius Caesar fought and defeated the forces of the senate. He then concentrated power in his hands to feed his personal ambition and to create a strong central government, make reforms and address the plight of the poor. After his assassination there were more civil wars which continued a power struggle which led to the fall of the Republic.

You have your terms mixed. An empire is a vast entity and a republic is a form of government. The two are not the same and one cannot morph into the other. Rome was already an empire during the republic. The Roman empire was governed by the republican form of government at first. When the republic collapsed, Augustus was able to step in and form the principate, which many people falsely call "the empire".

When did the Roman republic become the Roman empire?

Generally speaking there are two answers to this question. In all sense of the term of empire, it can be said that the Roman republic became an empire when the last remnants of its rival, Carthage was laid to waste. Rome then ruled the western areas of the Mediterranean Sea. In another sense, the Roman republic came to an end upon the rule of Augustus Caesar. At that point in 31 BC BCE, Octavian became Augustus Caesar and the "empire" ruled by an emperor can be said to be the end of the republic and into an empire.
