Because they wanted to people to work for them so that the slave owners wouldn't have to do the work!

Slavery was important to their economy. The South was mostly agrarian and the needed workers. As it turned out slavery was more expensive than hiring freemen to work the plantations. Slaveholders had to care for their slave into old age. which cost more than simply hiring able bodied men. It is kind of like our socisl welfare system today. We are one big plantation.

Why did the south want to keep slaves so bad?

The South want to keep slavery so badly because they wanted to be able to have work but they do not pay them, SO the South can make more money to buy more slaves, more lands, so they can pay their taxes.
