If it stops working you can replace it with a new one set to zero but the cars mileage is recorded on the title so you will have to take that into account if your trying to sell it as a newer car.

(not only is it legal to reset the odometer; its required in most states when you replace the engine. The odometer is required to reflect the mileage of the engine *NOT* the vehicle)
