Because Lincoln had won the 1860 election on a ticket of no new slave-states. So the South was doomed to be outvoted in Congress, which would pass laws that favoured the North at the expense of the South.

They felt that their cotton wealth would be enough to support them if they broke away from the United States.

What were Border States and why was Maryland so important?

The Border States were the slave-states of the Upper South which narrowly voted against joining the Confederacy. They were Missouri, Kentucky, Maryland and Delaware. Maryland was especially important, because if it had seceded, Washington D.C. would have been totally surrounded by enemy states. To prevent this, Lincon had to break the law by jailing some of their pro-Southern leaders without trial.

What was the effect of the naval blockade of the Confederacy by the Union?

Confederate leaders hoped that a victory in Union territory would win support from which countries?

The Confederacy hoped that the United Kingdom and the French Empire would support them, as these were arguably the two most powerful countries in the world at the time. Additionally, these two countries generally didn't like the idea of a powerful United States, so each had an interest in helping the Confederacy break away. However, Emancipation Proclamation in January 1863 largely ended those hopes. England and France had both banned slavery already, and now could not support the Confederacy, which sought to retain slavery. Later in the summer of 1863, devastating Union victories at Gettysburg and Vicksburg made it clear that the Confederacy had little hope of ultimately winning the war.

Did Canada break away from another country to become independent?

Not so much break as don't let the door hit you on the way out. Britain had been making more than a few suggestions that Canada should be taking care of things themselves. So when Canada Confederated they were quick to rubber stamp it. As to Independent, well lots of people would suggest Canada is far from independent.

How was the Civil War a referendum on federalism?

The Southern states claimed that they were entitled to break away, because the United States was a voluntary federation, from which any state could secede if it chose. Congress did not accept this. It refused to recognise the Confederacy as a sovereign nation, and declared those states to be in unlawful rebellion.

How do you learn all of the US states?

The best way to learn a list of words is memorization - break the list into sections and learn each short section, then you'll have the whole list memorized in no time. With states, the best way is by using a map - you can then break the country into sections and learn the states in that section, then move on to another section.
