When Iraq invaded Kuwait in 1990, the resulting conflict was known as the Gulf War. The initial coalition military operation was called "Operation Desert Shield" and had the job of protecting Saudi Arabia from attack. The offensive, called "Operation Desert Storm", began on Jan 15, 1991 when the coalition forces launched their attack on Iraq.
Iraq had invaded Kuwait.

The Iraq War was defined as the war when the United States and its Allies (the Coalition of the Willing) overthrew of the regime of Saddam Hussein in Iraq in 2003. The United States invaded on the pretense that Saddam Hussein was attempting to build weapons of mass destruction, but none were ever found. The Coalition of the Willing then spent the next 8 years (2004-2011) trying to maintain law and order in Iraq, supporting the creation of a new Iraqi Government, and attempting to suppress rebel and terrorist organizations.
