The war on the western front ended up in stalemate because of multiple reasons. In brief they are; Leadership problems from the triple alliance and the triple entente. The trenches in which the soldiers stayed (more so the allied ones) harbored diseases helped by the water flooding them, the rats and other vermin and the dead just left to rot if they were unreachable. The tactics from both sides weren't very strong either, most of the British Generals and Commanders were miles from the battle field and had no means of communication with there troops, such as the Somme this meant that the stubborn Generals would not change there tactics and so thousands of troops would climb up the ladders and run onto German machine gun fire. The Industrial problems were that not enough people were working back in the native countries to produce weapons and artillery etc. The allies had a shell shortage and so when the British made people work for the war effort who weren't fighting, the shell production boomed. Weaponry was also a problem, the Generals decided to use horses which were ineffective against machine gun fire and just blocked the troops trying to get past. Machine guns were also invented and these were mainly the source of why the Germans killed so many allied forces because the allies were determined on advancing and taking land back and so were constantly assaulting the enemy, whereas the German forces could defend and use machine guns to there maximum effectiveness. The ground each side occupied was also important, the Germans took there time and when they were being pushed back took the higher ground while the allies were forced to take the lower. This meant that the Germans could shoot down onto the allies and also could get further range from being higher.

Why did the western front change very little between 1915 and 1917?

in may 1915, Italy entered World War 1 by joining the Allied powers. Italy`s first move was to send its forces against Sustria-Hungary on the Italy-Austria border. In a long series of back-and-forth battles,Italy made little progress.

Why did World War 2 stop for one day of peace on the battlefield in the middle of the war?

This was in World War I, for Christmas, beginning with the first in 1914. There were limited ceasefires, burial details, and even some gift exchanges between the hostile forces. Although then-Pope Benedict XV's call for a truce was rejected, troops on the Western front observed similar limited ceasefires for Christmas, 1915, and on the Eastern front for Easter in 1916.

Who won the Second Battle of Ypres?

In a sense no one won the battle. The stalemate on the Western Front was not broken by the German offensive or the Allied counter-offensive. However, if a winner is to be given, it would be the Alllies. The British and Canadian troops at Ypres successfully held the line against poison gas and a massive German offensive. But the cost was horrific with 70,000 Allied dead, wounded, or missing and 35,000 German dead, wounded, or missing between April 22 to May 13, 1915.

Weapons used on the western front world war 1?

Rifles & machine guns were the most common weapon used on the Western Front, and were used by every allied and German soldier. Gas was first used in 1915 at the Second Battle of Ypres by the Germans, producing detrimental effects on British troops. Smaller weapons such as grenades, mortars and flamethrowers were also used, especially in battles of attrition warfare, such as the Battle of Verdun and the Battle of the Somme.
