The Panama Canal was built because it created a shorter route for ships to get from one place to another. Example: A ship from New York (U.S. East Coast) would use the canal to go to Japan, as opposed to going all the way around Europe.

The French started to build it but diseases disabled them to continue, then the United States finished it.
