They did return to England for a short time after leaving Holland, but the Purtians that left for Holland was a group from a Yorkshire village of Scrooby and they left for Holland because they feared for their safety in 1608 and then some went to Plymouth in 1620 with a group from East Anglia. The 1620 group was better financed . By 1640 they had grown to about 10,000 people in Massachusetts. This was a migration of families compared to other early migrations of young unattached men. The literacy rate was high and they had an intense devotional life. There are surviving diaries, sermon notes, poems and letters that tell us about the life they lived.
They left England for America to be rid of religious discrimination.
