Zoos were built since Roman times, when travel was hard and dangerous. Most people would never have had a chance to see real live animals that did not live in their part of the world.Right up to the 20th century, travel to exotic places was still quite time-consuming and somewhat dangerous. Today , even with air travel making seeing exotic animals easier, most of us cannot afford to spend thousands of dollars for a trip to Africa or South America or Alaska.

In the beginning, zoos were more like animal jail. Now Zoos are more concerned with "habitat areas" which are not only better for the animals, but for us to see them in a more natural setting so they display more genuine behaviors.

Our National Zoo in Washington D.C. is nice. Busch Gardens in Florida is wonderful. And I love the San Diego Zoo. They have huge habitat ares for their Gorillas and you can watch them run and climb and interact in family groups.
