They needed the room for the additional devices, such as the cameras, SD card drive and the hardware needed to decode WPA encryption. According to Satoru Iwata, Nintendo's president, "The decision was made to give up on the double slot and make the system smaller."
Nintendo has been very good with reverse compatability, allowing the Gameboy Color to play Gameboy games, the GB Advance to play Gameboy Color games, and the DS to play Gameboy Advance games. If anyone wants to play Gameboy Advance games, they can easily pick up a Gameboy Advance very cheaply these days.
