If you were a member of a north-eastern tribe such as the Mahican of the Hudson valley, you were surrounded by vast mixed woodlands, streams, lakes and rivers. No roads, no open grasslands, no herds of buffalo, no native copper, no other resources.
Timber and bark were available in huge quantities and all native American cultures were essentially Neolithic, meaning that they made good use of whatever was available locally.
Depending on where they were living Native Americans used many things. The plains doesn't have trees so the plains tribes didn't have the same living conditions as the northeastern tribes. This why they didn't use wood and bark. The northeast has forests thus they used what they had. Southeastern tribes also had to use other things because of the living conditions.

Wigwam's were usually made of birch bark or cattail mats for the outside of it. They used wood for the structure of it. They used either rope or small strips of wood to keep the birch bark or cattail mats on the wigwam.
To cure white birch bark, first remove the bark from the tree. Then, press the bark flat using a weight to hold it in position. Some people use books or metal weights to press the bark. Once it has dried for several days, the bark is cured for use.
You can never go wron with wood. Oak and cedar are great materials to use for a patio set in the northeast. They are durable and keep a beautiful finish for years.
