OK, lets avoid all the hypocrisy and self-serving rhetoric and get down to the nitty-gritty of expansionism and land-grabbing in the early 1800's. The Mexicans had long occupied California and most of what was Texas. -The USA under President James Polk had decided it needed a Pacific coast and California was IT. When Mexico wouldn't back down the war ensued.
- Compare this in modern times to the Russians recent grab of Crimea and it's attempts at grabbing Ukraine. -Russia needs a Black Sea port and sees Oddessa as it. -Is this situation really any different?

∙ 8y agoAfter the U.S. annexed Texas, there was a dispute over territory that both Texas and Mexico claimed. Also, the U.S. wanted to buy what us not the Southwest and California from Mexico as part of the Manifest Destiny movement. Defeating Mexico gave the U.S. both territories.
