When we say the collapse of the Roman Empire, we are referring to the Western Roman Empire, containing Rome. The Eastern Roman Empire survived and became the Byzantine Empire, thriving for another 1,000 years. Western Rome was very unstable and corrupt. It was also constantly thwarted by Barbarians, who ultimately brought about the destruction of the empire. Rome was also more vulnerable to an attack than Constantinople, as this city was set up more defensively.
The western part of the Roman Empire fell under the weight of the Germanic invasions. The Germanic peoples took over all the lands of this part of the empire except for Italy. The eastern part of the Roman Empire was not affected by these invasions and continued to exist for another 1,000 years.
The Western Empire was heavily infiltrated by the Goths and other peoples. The Western Empire army commander was a Goth, Odoacer, who deposed Emperor Romulus. The Eastern Byzantines managed to resist this problem and survived for another 1,000 years.
