When your hair is in braids its like play dough being put into those little molds. Its been it the braids for a while and its fragile so it takes the shape. Just like when a baby is first born. After being in a bothers uterus for so long cramped like that its legs are always bent for awhile.

Hair "locks" when braids have been in the hair for several weeks to a few months with minimal shampooing and retouches. If weave is used, the hair that is attached to the natural hair will collect products and dirt and cause a ball of products and also sticks the hair together like glue. This can be gummy also when trying to remove the build up. An easy way to remove the build up is by using a metal tipped rat tail comb, safety pin or hair pin to remove the ball of dirt, then loosen it with a brush, then shampoo the hair twice. Another reason the hair can lock is if the natural hair texture is very coily or kinky. If hair that tightly coiled just sits for several weeks to a month, the hair will latch onto itself and begin locking. An easy way to remove that is by doing what was afore mentioned or by putting a cream conditioner in the hair, then loosening up the hair using a small toothed comb and fingers to separate hair.
