Why didn't the US drop another bomb on japan?

The bomb wasn't ready although it may have been almost so by the end of the Okinawa battle. More to the point, the bomb was used to make a political statement as much as a military one. Dropping it on some far off post like Guadalcanal would serve no political purpose. Also, note that it is just a bomb after all, albeit a large one. Dropping it on a coral island or jungle mountain range would hardly have done the damage done by dropping on a heavily built up area like a city or military base. Those operations still require - to this day - significant ground forces.

They had a sudden stoke of sanity. They had proved their point (especially to the USSR).

The Soviets (with the help of extensive espionage) would soon be building their own bombs. The actual reasons that a third atomic bomb was not dropped were:

1) Japan surrendered on August 15, six days after the second bomb fell on Nagasaki - this proved that the weapon existed and that the US could build more.

2) The third US bomb was still being assembled, and would be ready on August 19, reportedly for use on Tokyo. President Truman was known to be ambivalent about this. There were at least 6 more being built, one production estimate being 3 bombs a month. With the war's end, the focus shifted to improvements rather than making the same bombs en masse.
