Most of the Northern population believed that on moral and religious grounds, slavery was an evil institution. The Northern economy was not based on slavery, although the cotton from the South was produced by the labor of slaves.
The South needed cheap, unskilled labor to cultivate crops such as tobacco and cotton. Both are quite labor-intensive (I can attest to the work involved in putting up tobacco--not a fun summer job). The North had an economy that was more heavily based on manufacturing and did not have the same need for unskilled labor.
The economy of the South was dependent upon slave labor.
They south was fighting to gain independence. The north was fighting to preserve the union. Slavery was a big issue during the civil war. The southern economy relied on slavery, without it the southern economy would have collapsed. The northern economy was threatened by slavery. After the south began using slaves in factories, the north became increasingly hostile to the south and slavery because southern factories used slave labor which allowed them to produce cheaper goods. The use of slaves in factories threatened northern economy. Many historians believe that this economic threat lead to the civil war.
New England colonies labor forces are to sell slaves and trade.
The Northern states economics depended mainly on factories and free labor, unlike the Northern sates the south depended on slave labor and agriculture!
The economy of Southern US was absolutely dependent on slaves. Their predominantly agricultural economy would not have survived without the forced labor of slaves. This fact is well known about the south, but most fail to realize that even the Northern economy was dependent on slave labor for success. The cotton that the South produced was shipped by Northern ships and financed by northern insurance companies. The Cotton trade itself was the reason for shipbuilding , for shipping, banking, insurance, as well as early factories which transformed the cotton into textiles. (All of this took place in the North). The cotton was shipped overseas and textiles were also exported, making the ENTIRE nation's economy dependent of the foreign currency generated by the South's slave labor. So, in the grand scheme of things, both the Northern and Southern economies benefited greatly from forced labor.
Many plantation owners in the South moved toward a one crop economy (cotton) and needed a cheaper labor source than the Northern idea of white labor.
because the north was more reliant on machine work than slave labor because the north was more industrial than it was agricultural

The Northern and Southern economies differed during the 18th and 19th centuries. For the most part, the Southern states were most agrarian and relied on slave labor. The Northern states were more industrialized and relied on individual labor. Additionally the North grew wheat and barley.

An economy that is based on the incomes derived from slave labor.
For an economy to function, it must have human labor. This includes a long list of types of labor in order to make an economy viable. Therefore, the resources of an economy run from scientists to teachers to business people to factory and farm workers.
The South's economy was based upon agriculture and slave labor, while the North's economy was based upon industrialization and wage labor.
